Galvanized steel wire is a carbon steel wire that is galvanized on the surface by hot plating or electroplating. Its performance is the same as that of straightened and tempered steel wire. It can be used as unbonded prestressed reinforcement, but at least 200~300g zinc shall be plated per square meter. It is often used as parallel steel wire cable of cable-stayed bridge (in addition, flexible cable sleeve is also used as outer protection).
Classification and Process Characteristics of Galvanized Steel Wire
Galvanized steel wire is mainly classified into hot-dip galvanizing and cold-dip galvanizing (electro-galvanizing) based on the production process. The core differences lie in the thickness of the coating, the production method, and the protective performance:
Hot-dip galvanized steel wire: This is produced by immersing steel components in heated molten zinc solution to form a coating. It has a fast production speed, a relatively thick coating (the minimum thickness allowed in the market is 45 μm), but poor uniformity. The color is a shiny silver-white. Due to the thick coating, its protective performance is better, and it is suitable for harsh environments such as chemical, petroleum, marine, and power industries.
Cold-dip galvanized steel wire: This is produced by depositing a zinc layer on the metal surface through electroplating. The production speed is slow, the coating is thin and uniform, and the color is shiny silver-white with a yellowish tint. Its coating thickness is thinner, and its protective performance is weaker than that of hot-dip galvanized, suitable for scenarios with lower requirements for anti-corrosion.
The performance characteristics of galvanized steel wire
Sturdy structure: The mesh surface is flat, with strong integrity. Even if a part is cut off or subjected to pressure, it will not loosen.
Excellent corrosion resistance: After galvanization treatment, the corrosion resistance is significantly enhanced, superior to that of ordinary steel wire mesh.
Diverse performance: Different types of galvanized steel wires also possess specific properties. For example, steel wires with a rare earth zinc-aluminum alloy coating, containing 5% - 10% of aluminum and trace amounts of rare earth elements, maintain the cathodic protection effect of zinc while significantly improving the uniformity and adhesion of the coating, and have excellent heat treatment performance, enabling a balance between strength and plasticity.
The surface of galvanized steel wire is smooth, smooth and clean, without cracks, knots, pricks, scars and rust. The galvanized layer is uniform, with strong adhesion, durable corrosion resistance, and excellent toughness and elasticity. The tensile strength shall be between 900Mpa and 2200Mpa (wire diameter Φ 0.2mm- Φ 4.4mm)。 Number of twists( Φ 0.5mm) for more than 20 times, and the repeated bending shall be more than 13 times.
The thickness of the hot-dip zinc coating is 250g/m. The corrosion resistance of steel wire is greatly improved.
Galvanized steel wire is mainly used for planting greenhouses, breeding farms, cotton packaging, spring and wire rope manufacturing. It is applicable to the cable of cable-stayed bridges, sewage tanks and other engineering structures with poor environmental conditions.
Quality standards for galvanized steel wire
Galvanizing layer-related standards: including zinc layer weight, uniformity and adhesion. Regarding zinc layer weight, different uses and specifications have different requirements. For example, when the thickness of the plated part is 3-4 millimeters, the zinc attachment amount should be less than 460 grams/meter (average thickness of no less than 65 micrometers), and for thickness greater than 4 millimeters, it should be no less than 610 grams/meter (average thickness of no less than 86 micrometers); uniformity can be tested by immersion in copper sulfate solution for five times without revealing iron; adhesion requires no detachment or protrusion after hammering test.
Dimension tolerance standards: The diameter must comply with the specified tolerance. The deviation standards vary for different industries. For example, the nominal diameter of hot-dip galvanized steel wire used for bridge cables allows a deviation of ±0.06 millimeters, and for 2.5 millimeter nominal diameter galvanized steel wire used for cotton packaging, the deviation is ±0.05 millimeters.
